Geo-Education for a sustainable geothermal heating and cooling market
Ground Source Heat Pumps, GSHP, contribute greatly to energy saving and emission reduction. Research in Europe shows that one of the barriers to a sustainable and growing geothermal market is the lack of appropriate skilled personnel, and quality of design and works are not always satisfactory.
The objective of this project is to develop European Education programme as an important step towards the certification of geothermal installations. From the different groups of professionals involved in a GSHP, the GEOTRAINET project is focused on two target groups: designers (those who carry out feasibility and design studies, including geology) and drillers (who make the boreholes and insert the tubes).

Project duration: 09/2008 to 02/2011; Contract: IEE/07/581/S12.499061

Representatives from 10 different countries gathered on 14 October 2011 to discuss the future of the Geotrainet project that officially closed in February 2011.

The participants of the Geotrainet+ meeting gave unanimously a very positive feedback on the ideas and inputs delivered and it was decided to organize a kick-off meeting in March 2012 until which the new bases that is status and regulations of a new international non-profit association as well as a list of delegations per country shall already be defined.

'GEOTRAINET +: The Next Steps'

Workshop.14.10.2011

Venue: European Federation of Geologists,

c/o Belgium Geological Survey, Rue Jenner 13, B-1000 Brussels

Save the Date!

The GEOTRAINET project, supported by the European Commission’s IEE programme (Altener), aimed to develop a European-wide educational programme as an important step towards the certification of geothermal installations. The vision of the GEOTRAINET project was that the training and certification programs will be recognised all over Europe and provide benchmark standards for consistent voluntary further education in the field of shallow geothermal in all participating countries.

The official activities of this project have come to an end, but the time is ripe to capitalise on the results and knowledge harnessed by this project.

To this end, EGEC and the European Federation of Geologists will host a workshop on the 14th of October in Brussels, in order to bring together interested parties to discuss how to capitalise upon the efforts of the Geotrainet project in training drillers and designers of shallow geothermal systems. Participants are welcome from all fields of activity and research related to shallow geothermal.
